Sun dried Clothing, a luxury? :)

For those of you who had been living in apartments , will sure understand if i say , drying clothes on the clothesline  outside your house would be so exciting ! :) or those of you who go through winters, will also appreciate the crispy sun dried clothes.

I realized how much i missed opening the gate, to walk out with the pail of washed clothes, and place it beneath the clothesline, to hang the clothes on the line and walk back inside with the emptied pail. hahahaha, sounds weird i know. But just doing that seemed like luxury once i moved to a landed house after 11 years living in an apartment. It was funny how we reacted when Nantha and i spotted the space at the back of our house where we could dry our clothes. " yay ! we can dry clothes at our backyard !!! "  :)  thats when i truly realized how how much i missed doing that!!! Then even more fun is, walking out to collect the dried clothes. All looking crisp and fresh !

As in the apartment, though we had direct sun light at our small balcony, it only lasted till about 1pm, then the sun goes above the building. It was the strong wind that usually dried the clothes. And since i had my tiny garden at the balcony, i had to be creative to be able to hang my washed clothes on the grill so i have enough space for all my clothes. Also had to plan what i wash each time, as i cant put blankets and towels together as it would take too much of the space.

But the thing is , i never felt it to be difficult or inconvenient while we were at the apartment. I just made use of the space i had and didnt complain at all. I guess human beings are made that way. We just get used to what we have and dont think much of it until something changes.

Though people have dryers nowadays, its still fun to do it for real. Dont you think? Hehe , maybe its just me. I love simple ways of life ! For it seems real ! And it brings back the sweet moments of childhood when we use to help our mom, to pick the clothes from the pail for her to clip it on the line or running out after her when it rains to pick the dried clothes before it gets drenched ! Those are the most joyful moments to me :):)

So, for those of you who already live in landed houses, do enjoy drying your clothes and please remember, even drying clothes outside could be luxury to many :)

Have a sunny day all !! :)

The Kashmir Shawl

We were at The Gardens, Mid Valley, standing in the queue to have dinner at Sushi Zanmai with another two friends. But the queue didnt seem to be moving at all. Thats when we noticed, the bookstore, BORDERS was just next to the restaurant. So my friend and i decided to let our hubbies stand at the queue while we went to the bookshop for a quick shopping :) And as i browsed through the racks and displays of books, The Kashmir Shawl caught my attention, for a few reasons...one, i LOVE shawls ! two, Kashmir reminded me of the snow capped mountains in Switzerland which i recently visited, three, of course because it was about India ! and above all , coz i was curious how a simple shawl could be made the central character of a novel. I mean how much of a story could be linked to a SINGLE shawl ??  So i grabbed this book to read the outline at the back. Just as i guessed, it sounded pretty interesting. So without thinking further i took it right up to the counter and paid for it....and off i went back to the queue.

The story begins with the exquisite antique shawl found by Mair ( the grand daughter of the person who owned this shawl long time ago ) . Mair becomes curious about how her grandmother could afford such an expensive shawl and decides to trace its history which stretches way back into 1850's  in war torn India. She embarks on a quest all the way to Kashmir from England to unravel the mystery behind this shawl....and thats how the story begins. I wouldnt get into details as you can always browse or read the book itself.

I only wish to share my thoughts about how sometimes a simple thing like a shawl could hold so much. It explains the Pashmina weavers and traders in Kashmir and their lifestyle then. The traditional weaving method takes months to complete a single piece of shawl in painstaking process which requires absolute concentration, energy, patience and of course love !!

I wish to share excerpts from the novel which explains how important shawls were to these people:

"The finest items were made in the hope that the completed shawl would find a wealthy buyer, perhaps to be worn for a wedding or laid in as part of a bride's dowry. In Kashmiri families shawls of all grades represented the women's security. They could be cut up , sold in pieces to buy food or pay debts, retrieved and pieced together again."

"Shawls were given as gifts, hoarded as treasure, passed on from mother to daughter. The finest examples, the Kani pieces like Mair's grandmother's, these were hardly made nowadays and the techniques were all but lost. They were too costly and the weavers couldn't any longer afford to spend months bent over a loom in the hope of their shawl fetching a good price when it was finally completed. "

" Laid out in a tidy row across the breadth of it were hundreds of kani bobbins, each one wound with a different shade of hair-fine weft yarn. For each row of the pattern, an intricate design of flowers on a black ground, Mair understood that every one of the bobbins would have to be taken up in order and passed between the warp threads. Each time the exact number of threads had to be counted before one colour gave  way to the next. The pattern-maker's instructions were written out on a rough grid pinned up in front of the weaver, a tumble of scribbled digits that looked like mathematical calculations of an early astronomer.

Mair let out a breath she had been holding.

It must take fifteen minutes of concentration, she calculated to weave just one single row of the shawl. Less than half a metre takes three months to be completed."

Now, how would you feel if you owned such a shawl !! how precious it would be. But then, such things dont seem to attract people nowadays...all we want is ... FAST FAST FAST....who on earth today , has the time to sit on a single piece of shawl for THREE months...!! But then, seriously, where are we all rushing to ? it makes me laugh when i think of it sometimes, the earth is swirling in the same speed for billions of years...and yet what gives us the idea that we need to rush into everything in order to live well ! yoga tells you to breath slowly...the slower the better, but do we even remember we are breathing while we are rushing like mad?? as my friend Kym always mentions " running like headless chickens" !!haha isnt that we are doing ?

Anyway this story about shawls also reminded me of my mom's wedding saree which is about 47 years old now but still looks as good as new. Such beautifully woven silk with gorgeous shades of orange, gold and earthy colours. The gold  thread still glows beautifully. Now i am tempted to follow the history of my moms saree :) Though i know the village from where it came from, just curious to know how it was made and by whom. Wouldnt it be great if i found out !?? hahaha...me crazy as always, having crazy ideas :) But it could be possible, because those days, the Kashmiri shawl weavers had the habit of weaving a sign like alphabets or symbols on the shawls to identify the weavers. So , who knows,my moms saree might have a history too :)

Nature has thought us that anything that grows slowly , grows the strongest. Like the mighty oak ,or chinese bamboo ! So, lets take time to weave our lives, a single thread at a time, a different colour at a time, and let it finish elegantly to last forever ! :)

Lets be a Kashmir Shawl .......

Malaysians we are :)

During my recent tour in Europe, i realized something interesting about us, Malaysians. We get all excited when we see anything that is connected to our country, i first noticed this in London, when we saw the restaurant called " Jom Makan " and we all go"hey ! look ! its the  ...Malaysian restaurant !! " then we go clicking away...taking pictures of the WORDS simply because its written in Bahasa Malaysia . Hello !...we are walking in one of the MOST exciting and popular city in the world...with The Tower Bridge and Big Ben boasting its history....and here we are ...getting excited about a Malaysian restaurant !

Then, it gets better....we are in Switzerland...in the cable car , going up one of the most scenic and divine Mount Titlis ...watching the glaciers flow elegantly lined by dark rocks and green pine trees, while we are indulged in its beauty , i hear my aunt saying " Look !! " and i thought she had spotted some amazing view or bird  or animal or something ...but then it was a sign inside the cable car, written in Bahasa Malaysia again. "Selamat Datang Ke Kereta Kabel Gantung Berputar yang Pertama Di Dunia " :) then of course...we are snapping pictures of it though we needed to hold on to the bars to be able balance and not fall on anyone..still we HAD to snap a picture of those words !!

Now, it gets EVEN better....we are in the City of Love....Paris , and just got to the top of the Eiffel Tower, walking around admiring the gorgeous view from there AND again...we stop to snap pictures ....now what ? Of course, we spotted Kuala Lumpur Tower in the list of towers stated inside the Eiffel Tower. And we were proud that Malaysia was in it !

We had a day for gardening at Dunstable, England. So, we all went shopping for plants at a nursery by the country side. This place was just so lovely with such beautiful varieties of flowers and potted plants which made it pretty hard to choose from. The roses were just huge and colourful. While we admired all those flowers and plants , we then spotted a very familiar flower...the Hibiscus !! And of course we were excited to see our national flower bloomed beautifully, thousands of miles away from home ! Was also surprised that it could grow so well in a completely different climate like in England. So we also snap a picture of it .

Then we go to LIVERPOOL !! yes, all those Liverpool fans got so jealous of me :) haha..as my brother took us on the Anfield Tour which was pretty exciting, really ! Then guess what, this time we found a restaurant owned by a chinese guy from Gunung Rapat , Perak ! And since all 4 of us are from Perak...we just HAD to have dinner there ! oh by the way, the food was really good !!

After the 3 weeks ...i was back home, and sorting out the photographs, and as i was uploading pictures taken in Brussels at the Atomium, i noticed there was some familiar letters again.... " SELAMAT DATANG " was written at the entrance among many other languages...and i got excited to spot it , but was disappointed that i didnt notice it while i was there itself, so i could have taken a close up of it. So i upload it in my FB and have my friends spot the words and we all get excited about it ! hahahaha.....ohh by the way, if you couldnt spot it...the words are written in the letter E, 3rd from top, isnt so clear here though...

Now need i say more !! Simple words of Bahasa Malaysia, local food or a plant even could get us excited while we are somewhere travelling.

Then i thought...

Malaysians will be always Malaysians....nothing could could take that feeling from our hearts :)

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY TO ALL BEAUTIFUL MALAYSIANS !

Frozen Silence ..

I was sobbing away, shoved my face into the pillow as hard as i could coz i didnt want to freak out my aunt and cousin who was sleeping on the other side of the room, in Engelberg, Switzerland. We checked into that hotel about 3 hours ago. I couldnt describe the awesome view we had at our balcony, the glaciers melting down frozen, pine trees in the coolest shades of green , the alpine meadows and above all the sound of the swiss cowbells !! yes you keep hearing the bells even when you couldnt spot the cows. A scene like out of a fairy tale and yet it was for real. How serene, how HUGE, and yet how calm nature can be...all at one time.

I stood at the balcony spellbound , absorbing every inch of it so i would remember it forever...for i know no pictures will ever be able to reflect the true sense of beauty i was looking at. After a while it got misty and dark and i coudnt see the mountains anymore. I was eager to see it again in the morning. So decided to sleep well through the night so i could be up early.

So we all went to bed, i was in my separated side of the room tucked into the very cozy bed. Closed my eyes and there it was ! standing tall , frozen in absolute silence, the mountains ....the picture i had absorbed every inch that evening just popped up and it wont go away even if i tried. Looking at it...i tried to sleep...but i couldnt. So i started to talking to it ...strangely the first words that came out was...

" It was You wasnt it ?? It was You who called me here...fabricated this whole tour across thousands of miles away...coz You know i would Love You to bits...! You wanted me to SEE You " ....and after a pause...i said again...
" It REALLY was YOU..wasnt it ? "

And the next thing i knew was...i was sobbing away..tears just flowing and i couldnt control myself. I felt like crying out loud but again i didnt want to get my aunt worried. So i just turned over and shoved my face into my pillow and continued crying for a few mins...then...i felt better and also puzzled ! hahaha...yeah i couldnt understand what it was about...but i was sure it wasnt because i was sad...or excited...i couldnt explain the feeling. Thats when i realised this, when i asked " It was You wasnt it ?" to the mountain, i heard IT say

" Yes, it  is Me, and now that you could SEE Me...do you think i could go wrong? "

That was the answer that triggered my senses. Something SO real , so HUGE, Such beauty has to be simply RIGHT. So, it is safe to put your trust in it. Thats what i learnt that night and ever since that experience i felt so much lighter , happier and calmer than i had been before.  So it was the frozen silence that spoke the loudest . So clear and to the point , you can never argue !

Though i wasnt satisfied with any of the pictures i snapped, for its too big to be contained..still just for remembrance, here are a few which i took from the balcony of our hotel :)

A Yogurt inspired moment :)

The pass two days had been pretty hectic at work...had too  many things in line, to be either solved , sent, received, keyed in , confirmed , printed , scanned , clarified, paid or charged...all in ONE day ! So, i was kind of getting a little dizzy with the whole scenario. But kept telling myself ... " ONE at a TIME" :) haha and somehow got almost 90 % of it done by the end of the day. So, as i was having my late lunch, wanted to have rice with plain yogurt ( the indian yogurt of course ) for some cooling effect. And no doubt i felt a lot relaxed after the awesome meal !

And as i got home, i thought....how about a yogurt facial as well :) hehe , yeah , since i always have loads of yogurt in my fridge i do have some splashed on my face once in a while.

So, applying some generous amount of yogurt on my face and neck, i lied down on the couch and closed  my eyes just to let it dry off and rested there for a bout 15 mins. And loved the cooling effect on my forehead  which really helped to relax the mind a bit.

Then , at that moment , i thought about the book i was reading currently , The Aleph by Paulo Coelho.  And it suddenly dawned on me how clearly i understood the contents of the book which was triggered by that cooling off moment i had . "Aleph" according to this book meant the precise POINT where the whole universe is contained within you, and you become part of it and also the whole of it. It isnt easy to grab the idea unless you have put some thought about it for sometime. I woudnt discuss the book in this post because this is all about my yummylicious YOGURT ! :) and also because i am only halfway through the book. So, i shall save it for next time.

Coming back to my yogurt story......yeah, as i felt that calmness within me caused by the cold yogurt on my face, i thought this ...

" so what happened to all the tension i was going through the pass 2 days ? how come it just vanished in an instant? "THIS MOMENT" i am totally cooled off, and felt like the whole universe was in somekind of perfection in which i was part of. Nothing from the past nor the future would effect "THIS MOMENT" i have in hand. So what does it matter if someone shouted at you last week or if someone misunderstood you last month...or if someone betrayed you last year...or someone isnt keeping their promise they made to you ...or if you are not doing enough window shopping ...or if you couldnt plan a holiday for the next whole year....or if you have been waiting tirelessly for something to happen....or if the worst TV shows are aired just the day you are stuck at home having nothing else to do...or the book you bought doesnt make any sense...ok ok ...i think you get the idea...what i mean is...NONE of such things effects the moment you surrender to "THIS MOMENT" When you are totally with yourself, nothing else seems to matter at all. At other times we burden our heart and mind with such thoughts which we inflict upon ourselves..no one is responsible if we feel miserable at any time because we always have the choice of switching the mode to " PEACE AND CALM" sometimes it comes easy ( Like my yogurt moment ) but at other times we've got to put some effort to remind ourselves that nothing but OUR selves matters. And this does not mean we are selfish. Everyone deserve to be at peace, its our right ! So, making ourselves miserable does not help anyone at all but staying happy and peaceful does !! "

Now seriously...thats quite a lot of thought to be inspired by plain YOGURT, dont you think? hahaha yeah...but thats life, always revealing itself in the simplest of moments! It just waits to pounce on you when you are least alert. So watch out for such simple moments !

And ohh...do have some YOGURT today :)

From Taiping to Titlis :)

If you noticed my profile picture for this blog, it is me jumping by the lake garden in Taiping Perak , Malaysia. That was my first experience doing those jumping poses. I never thought i could do it. But during that trip 2 years back with my beautiful friends from KL, one of them, Kym gave us the idea of how to do it. So she started jumping and i was snapping her pictures and was amazed at how lovely the pictures turned out. So we all got excited and started jumping together . Thats how i got that first jumping pose! Then, i kind off encouraged other friends to do it whenever we got the opportunity and a good backdrop.

And this time , during my trip to Europe, i couldnt help doing the jumping poses again everywhere i go, you cant blame me, with the kind of backdrops you get over there you might even attempt a "floating in the air" pose !

First it was at Dunstable, a beautiful town about an hour from London, and there are rolling hills and meadows here SO gorgeous you cant help jumping around...! And here i made our friend from Dunstable try it as well , and she enjoyed it so much and came up with interesting ideas like jumping off the cliff as in the pic above :)

Then...we were in Switzerland, at Mt Titlis......gosh ! need i say more ! So here i go again .... at first we were wandering if it was a good idea to do it there as it was pretty slippery even to just walk on. We kept tripping over the snow for every 2 to 3 steps...but then decided we simply got to try it ...and when i see the pictures now ...I am SO glad we did ! Worth the risk and effort ! Well, thats the highest point ive jumped off so far and ohh....it definitely helped to keep ourselves warm :)

Looks like now ive got a new hobby...to jump around the world :) Thanks to my friend Kym who started this in Taiping! hehehe yeah, hope to see more breathtaking places so i could keep jumping !

So, next time you see a place worth jumping off ....dont think twice ! yeah of course you will get some spectators laughing at you ! but who cares ...its your life ! Your Jump ! Just do it and You will love it ! And  if you try it, you will know that it is impossible not to smile while you do these jumping poses...so every picture turns out with your best smile coz you just cant help it ! Its is a joyful experience. So....up for a jump ! ? :)

Europe 2012 :)

Europe.....now it all seems like a book i read...the rolling hills, meadows, fields, crystal clear streams, the divine snow capped mountains, the enchanting woods , the roaring waterfalls...roses and lavenders, ...blueberries and blackberries, the dairy farms, the humble sheeps, horses, colourful ducks, and swans....castles and ancient cathedrals....could it be true i walked through all these and more in just 3 weeks..? or was it just another book i read ???

Honestly thats how it seems now...real and unreal at the same time...but the only thing that keeps reminding me that it was all real is the photographs.. :) yes...THANKS to my brother, Navin who lives in England, who made this exceptionally beautiful holiday possible. Also thanks to the most amazing family friends we have in Dunstable who let us stay with them, which gave me a chance to experience the english lifestyle and not just being a clueless tourist wandering around. Thanks to my aunt who invited me to go with her :)

Honestly i dont know where to start...places so breathtakingly beautiful leaves your soul stretched out and light . Theres just SO MUCH to share , but i will sure do it the soonest possible, one at a time :)
